As its contribution to the implementation of the 2012 European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity Between Generations, Volonteurope commissioned a Europe-wide research into good practices and proposals for strengthening the role of volunteering and other forms of civic engagement in promoting active ageing and intergenerational solidarity.

The report, officially launched at Volonteurope’s 21st Annual Conference (Florence, Italy, 18-20 October 2012), as well as at the CEV Symposium in Lisbon, Portugal, sets out a number of policy themes focused around thematic areas:

  • Emphasising the contribution that older people make to society
  • Encouraging companies to focus on staff approaching retirement
  • Supporting the active ageing of people with dementia
  • Addressing loneliness and isolation for older people
  • Volunteering promoting solidarity between generations
  • Lifelong learning
  • Innovations in volunteering through new technology and social media.
