· Athens participates on End Street Homelessness campaign
· Emfasis Foundation is leading the campaign locally
In Athens, the exponential growth of street homelessness in the last decade has been an inevitable consequence of the economic downturn in Greece. Furthermore, the ever-increasing number of refugees and migrants flowing into the country since the beginning of the Syrian conflict as well as from the other troubled areas in geographical proximity, are stretching resources to fight homelessness.
Late last year, cities that are part of the European End Street Homelessness Campaign (pioneered by WorldHabitat) came together to share their ongoing journey to increase awareness around ending street homelessness in their respective cities. During the event it was announced that three new cities would formally participate in the campaign: Athens, Bratislava and Sheffield.
Emfasis Foundation will be driving the campaign in Athens. In the next few weeks and months, special groups of streetworkers and trained volunteers will engage in special activities in order to collect more data, enhance awareness about rough sleeping and involve the local civic society through information sessions and workshops.
