Volonteurope is involved in several Erasmus+ projects, working with young people with fewer opportunities, developing volunteer and volunteer management training, and introducing innovative approaches to citizenship education.
VOLUNTEERING FOR THE FUTURE
Research conducted around this project has found that young volunteers who have returned from a volunteering mission or assignment abroad often return to their home countries with a strong commitment to working to secure a more just and equitable world. This extensive research was the first major output of this project, and you can read it here – Engaging Volunteers in Active Citizenship: Research, Learning and Best Practice from Four Countries.
In light of this research, Volunteering for the Future focused on developing learning opportunities tailored to young volunteers returning from the global south. Utilising innovative outreach techniques and methodologies, it aims to nurture the transformative potential of these young people. The project produced a comprehensive suite of research on the obstacles preventing returned volunteers from engaging for the benefit of their local communities. This research has been used to develop training and education materials and online learning opportunities. The second major output of the project was the trans-European What Next? A training resource for working with returned volunteers, which presents a multinational perspective on volunteering. For the third output, each partner in the project developed a country specific training manual that aims to help returned volunteers remain engaged in volunteering, especially in their local communities. More recently, the consortium created and ran an online volunteering course. The course was held over four weeks via webinar, and gave participants the opportunity to reflect on their volunteering experiences and practice, and think about creating action projects. The resources created as part of the Volunteering for the Future Erasmus+ funded project will remain publicly available after the end of the project on August 2018.
BE PART FEEL YOUR PART
Alongside Jugend Am Werk Steiermark and and E.N.T.E.R. (Austria), Municipio de Lousada (Portugal) FO-Aarhus (Denmark) and Ares (Italy) Volunteering Matters is engaged in the Erasmus+ funded Be Part Feel Your Part: Political participation approaches on local level for young people at risk of social exclusion project.
The project will be working on political approaches on the local level for young people at risk of social exclusion, its aim is to engage with youth workers in the field of social environment and social care. The outputs of the project will include a training programme for these same youth workers, providing concise and comprehensive training on how to engage with young people around the planning and implementation of democratic participation projects with young people.
This programme will enhance the quality of youth work in Europe, and the training offered will provide the necessary skills and competences to tackle the challenges faced by Europe’s ‘lost generation’. This ‘lost generation’ of young people in Europe are already facing high unemployment rates, diminishing future prospects in terms of home ownership and stability, loss of social cohesion and challenges around the ongoing refugee crisis. The primary goal of Volonteurope and partners – FACE (France), Pour la Solidarité (Belgium), VOLUM (Romania) and Wisamar (Germany) – in this project, was the promotion of volunteering activities as a valid pathway to employment. The project adapted the ProfilPass – a tool to express interests and competences – into a “Portfolio for Volunteering experiences.” This document helped the partners identify the skills acquired during volunteering and helped to translate these into skills and competences valued in the job market. In the duration of this project, Volonteurope and partners worked to facilitate employment opportunities for volunteers by reaching out to the private sector for recognition of these skills. The main objective of the ENGAGE project was to develop a European citizenship module-based handbook for students aged from 8 to 12 years old. The consortium of partners involved in developing the handbook consisted of: Zentrum polis (Austria), La Ligue de l’enseignement de Bourgogne and Cidem (France), The DARE Network (Belgium), Der Arbeitskreis deutscher Bildungsstätten (Germany), La Fundación Educativa y Asistencial Cives (Spain) and Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej (Poland). The content of the handbook was equally split, with one half focusing on civic participation, and the other on democratic participation. Included topics encompassed learning activities on multiperspectivity in history education, sustainable development, solidarity and democracy. The ENGAGE project finished in January 2017, and the completed models have been published on the project website.
The objective of the INCREASE project was to develop an interdisciplinary further training programme, aimed specifically at youth workers and volunteers working in youth care. This further training programme supports youth workers to develop skills to tackle the complex situations that can frequently feature in their day-to-day work, especially in residential youth care and crisis intervention. The consortium first completed an explorative study on this subject and from that developed the INCREASE 80 hours training programme, which was piloted in the participating countries. Building on the experiences gained through the project, the consortium developed a policy recommendation paper presented at a final multiplier event in Austria in September 2017. This paper provided concrete support and recommendations for policy makers towards an improvement of an inclusive youth policy in Europe.

Faced with decreasing support, civil societies across Europe are being forced to work more effectively to achieve their desired objectives. To support them in becoming more proficient, we collaborated with Gemeinsam leben & lernen in Europa e.V.(Germany), Centrul de Volontariat Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Dobrovolnické centrum (Czech Republic) in the ProVol Erasmus+ project. The aim of the project was to foster the professional skills of volunteers and their coordinators, and as a result, make volunteering a valid pathway to full time employment. As part of this project, the consortium partners assessed the state and status of volunteering in the participating countries and published modular handbooks for both volunteers and their coordinators. These valuable training materials are available for consultation on the project website. Tailored publications for volunteers and coordinators have been made available for the participating countries in addition to European wide handbooks.
