[:en]Volonteurope has today (30 September) signed a petition calling for the job title of one of the EU’s most senior officials to be abolished.

The international network has joined growing calls from across Europe for the title ‘Vice-President for Protecting our European Way of Life’ to be changed for the official in charge of migration.

Oonagh Aitken, President of Volonteurope, said:

“As an organisation we promote active citizenship, volunteering and social justice across Europe and the recent changes to the Commission, announced by incoming president Ursula von der Leyen, have given us some cause for concern.

“This official’s main responsibility is migration and hence this job title implies that the European way of life is somewhat at odds with migration and needs protecting from it.

“Europe, like our member network, is made up of a diverse group of people who choose to call Europe their home, regardless of where they were born.

“We want people to know that Europe is a tolerant, democratic community and migration does not pose a threat to our European way of life.

“We would urge others to sign this petition today before MEPs question the candidate for this position and finalise the job title later this week.”

The petition is organised by WeMove.EU in partnership with European Anti Poverty Network and Social Platform and is available here. [:]
